Positive signs on SmartCity agreement – I.T. Minister

The Minister for Industry, Investment and Information Technology Dr Austin Gatt described as a positive sign the news reports in a local newspaper and also in the Gulf News that the SmartCity negotiations will be finalized next month. The Minister said this while addressing a seminar organised by Hewlett Packard in Malta on Tuesday attended by 130 foreign delegates.

In fact, according to Gulfnews, TECOM Investment and Sama Dubai, both members of Dubai Holding, will launch SmartCity by investing in Malta, as well as Kochi, India. Fareed Abdul Rahman, executive director of TECOM International said that a formal announcement on the launch of SmartCity will be made next month.

In his speech Minister Gatt spoke about Malta’s progress in information technology. He pointed out that this progress is attracting foreign investment such as the SmartCity project. He mentioned also the importance of strategic liaisons with other international foreign companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and HP itself.

He also spoke about the Government’s work in order to decrease the digital gap and also mentioned a number of initiatives taken in order for this gap to be eliminated.
