Parliamentary Secrtary Dr. Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici has filed a libel suit against Malta Labour Party (MLP) and Opposition leader Dr. Alfred Sant, after being accused of engaging a company belonging to an inmate’s relatives to clean his private secretariat. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Alfred Sant called on Parliamentary Secretary Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici to resign in the wake of Special Cleaners Ltd, owned by the family of inmate Mario Camilleri L-Imnieħru, cleaning his private secretariat. Mario Camilleri is doing time of money laundering and drug trafficking.

The same company had also been awarded a contract to clean the law Courts of Malta, a contract of which the Parliamentary Secretary was responsible, according to the MLP leader. Dr. Alfred Sant insisted that should the Parliamentary Secretary not resign, he is to be removed form his current post by Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi.

The MLP hinted that the company owners and the Parliamentary Secretary could be in close contact with one another. Dr. Sant further alleged that the relatives of Mario Camilleri are also accused of serious crimes.

In the light of Dr. Sant’s claims, Dr Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, issued a statement on Thursday evening, categorically denying the MLP leader’s accusations. In the statement, the Parliamentary Secretary said it is pitiful that political responsibility is being stretched to dimensions where a politician is expected to personally see to whom is cleaning offices. The Parliamentary Secretary said that the contract Dr. Sant made reference to on Thursday morning had been halted soon after it was discovered that L-Imnieħru’s relatives were responsible for the cleaning of the Court.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici declared that he has never had anything to do with Mario Camilleri and has filed a libel suit against Dr. Alfred Sant in the light of what was said during Thursday morning’s press conference.
