Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato said in the recent days that Libya is willing to allow Frontex sea patrols aimed at curbing illegal immigration from its shores.

Libya will join forces in the joint-sea patrols on two conditions, namely that the Libyan coast patrols are entrusted to Malta and Italy and that they are undertaken with Libyan collaboration, reported Agenzia Giornalistica Italia.

The news came after the Italian Interior Minister along with Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema met Libyan leader Muammar Kadhafi in Tripoli at the end of the joint EU-AU migration conference.

Minister Amato said that the Libyan agreement is a significant step forward since the country had so far opposed to Frontex patrols along its coastline.

Further possibilities for co-operation between Libya and the EU will be explored when Libyan experts visit Brussels in December.
