Consultation meetings for Malta Labour Party’s (MLP) draft plan for the elderly are currently underway. On Wednesday party leader Dr. Alfred Sant met a delegation of the Unjoni Ħaddiema Magħqudin (UĦM) to discuss the plan. Speaking during the meeting the Opposition leader said that there should be a good balance between the support granted to elderly who live comfortably and elderly who require full attention to live decently.
He added that the draft plan for the elderly is one of five plans which all deal with social issues, covering working conditions, the family, equality and youths.
Dr. Sant explained that the MLP is interested in listening to different viewpoints where the plans are concerned. He also said that even when the plajns are approved in General Conferences, the MLP is ready to continue discussing the plans as circumstances change. The MLP leader also added that the work carried out by the party at present forms part of the electoral manifesto for the upcoming general election.
In turn General Secretary to the UĦM Gejtu Vella said that the draft plan deals with important issues that elderly people deal with. He added that now the MLP is to refine the way in which the plans will be carried out. Gejtu Vella also stated that while the UĦM believes that the private sector is to be given space for the safeguarding of the elderly; their ultimate responsibility is to remain in the hands of the state.
