Commonwealth Secretary General visits Malta

Secretary General of the Commonwealth Don McKinnon is currently in Malta to pay the island a short visit. Meeting Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Frendo on Thursday, the current political situation in Fiji as well as the upcoming Commonwealth Summit to be held in November were discussed.

Don McKinnon explained how preparations for the Summit are currently underway, while the Minister spoke of Malta’s work on the “Connect” project which is aimed at spreading information technology to developing countries.

The Commonwealth General Secretary also met Opposition and Malta Labour Party (MLP) leader Dr. Alfred Sant. In the meeting, held during the afternoon, Don McKinnon stated that small countries like Malta are to make use of the commonwealth to obtain the largest possible benefits from their accession. In turn, Dr. Sant said that the MLP will do its utmost so that Malta can benefit of the advantages the Commonwealth offers.
