The Cabinet of Ministers is holding a meeting to discuss the government’s proposals on the pension reform and is expected to draw up a final document on Wednesday. The discussions between Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and the government’s minister will focus on the proposals that the government received from several entities and also from the public.

The public consultation was carried out following the publication of the Task Force Report that was made public together with the Budget speech for 2006 by Dr Gonzi.

The pension reform focus on three main issues: the increase in the retirement age of 65 years of age, which the Task Force proposed that, should be accomplished in an incremental manner; private pensions; and the introduction of a minimum pension.

Earlier this month, Dr Gonzi announced that the Maltese government is expected to publish the main framework of the pension reform in the coming weeks.
