The local councillors elected on the 11th March 2006, were sworn in during a ceremony on Monday. Vice Prime Minister Tonio Borg congratulated each elected councillor for being trusted by the residents of the respective localities whilst reminding them of their right to take decisions according to their authority, and of their duty in setting an example to the other citizens.

Minister Tonio Borg said that: ”Local Councils are a practical implementation of the principle that decisions are taken by those who would be directly affected by them. The setting up of individual locality Maltese and Gozitan Local Councils and not regional ones was a courageous move taken on behalf of the government of which I have formed part for the last 13 years. Since the beginning, Local Councils have been endowed with the legal responsibility of local government entities with statutory functions that have increased gradually throughout the years and that are now stabilised and accepted by all. The principal of a local government is also found within Malta's constitution following an agreement from both sides of the House of ParliamentHe continued by saying that to lead the local politics the government needs committed people who are responsible and civil".

Vice President Borg also reminded those present that thanks to the amendment within the local council Act citizens could directly elect their localities’ mayor and vice mayor.

“Today’s ceremony is taking place so that those present take their oath to serve as councillors as of the 1st April, 2006.”
