Arnold Cassola was elected to the Italian House of Representatives garnering 19,192 votes under the L'Unione party forming part of Romano Prodi's centre left coalition. Prime Minister, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, congratulated Professor Cassola, on his election to the Italian House of Representatives.
Cassola is the first Maltese citizen who was allowed to contest the Italian elections and was elected to Italy's House of Representatives. He placed second in a list of 114 European aspiring to make it to the House of Representatives.
In his letter of congratulations the Prime Minister expressed his sincere congratulations on Cassola's election to the House of Representatives of Italy from the Unione list for the Verdi party (Greens). He augured that the excellent bilateral bonds between Malta and Italy will be further strengthened thanks to Prof Cassola’s special contribution as a Maltese national in the House of Representatives of Italy.
The Prime Minister added that he is also confident that this unique connection will contribute to reinforce the solidarity and friendship that exist between Malta and Italy. Finally he wished Mr Cassola success in his future endeavors.
