Two consortia short listed for cargo handling at Port

In a statement, the Government said that two consortia have been shortlisted to start discussions regarding the handling of cargo at the Grand Harbour, Valletta. The two consortias are La Valletta Terminal Co (Malta) Ltd (Salv Bezzina & Sons Ltd, Salvu Meli & Sons Ltd and Mr Joseph Paris) and TF Shipping Agencies Limited (Tumas Group Company Ltd, Portek Ports [Mauritius] Ltd, and Portek International Ltd).

The criteria for selection were based on:
* technical and operational criteria,
* criteria regarding the strategic plan of the consortia and their proposals for the employment of current workers at the port.
* financial criteria on the level of operational investment and the facilities development at the port and also the proposals for the decrease of tariffs for the managing of merchandise at the port.

Those who were to submit a proposal were requested to specify if they would be employing the present workers already employed in the handling of merchandise at the Grand Harbour. The two chosen consortia have declared that they were ready to employ those workers indicated by the call for proposals issued by the Government that is the workers employed by the Cargo Handling Co. Ltd. and also the Delivery clerks and the Tally clerks.

The Ministry for Competitiveness and Communications has appointed a committee that will be working on the negotiations with the two consortia. During the next few weeks the appointed committee will be holding discussions in order to decide who will finally be the managing operator of the cargo handling at the Grand Harbour.
