MLP launches ICT vision statement

The Malta Labour Party (MLP) leader Dr Alfred Sant has on Saturday officially launched the party’s draft vision statement for information and communication technology (ICT). Dr Sant said that the document contains 50 proposals which are being presented to the public and all interested parties and stake holders for their consideration. The aim of the proposals is to create an inclusive ICT driven society.

Leo Brincat, MLP’s main spokesperson for ICT said that the draft vision statement recognises what the Nationalist government has achieved in the ICT sector. However, the draft also outlines what the country needs to do to move ahead in the field and to develop it further.

While addressing the press conference, Helena Dalli, MLP’s main spokesperson for the civil service said that when in government the MLP would ensure that civil servants are given all the appropriate training so that Malta would reap maximum benefits from the funds being invested in the information and communication technology sector within the public sector.

The proposals include the creation of the right incentives so that Maltese emigrants who were successful in ICT in foreign countries return to Malta and invest in this sector locally. Another proposal refers to further ICT development within the tourism sector where the country’s heritage, museums, libraries and national archives could be accessible on the internet. Another proposal urges the Electoral Commission to study the possibility of introducing e-voting beginning at Local Council elections level in order to study the pros and cons of this innovative initiative.
