MLP wins 52-53% of votes and 3 localities from PN

The Malta Labour Party (MLP) is jubilant at the indications that the party has garnered an absolute majority of votes in the Local Council elections.

MLP Deputy Leader Michael Falzon stated that the percentage of votes the party garnered could be as much as 53%. On the other hand unofficial sources within the PN said the party garnered just 43% of the votes.

The first count of votes in Msida revealed that MLP gained absolute majority at the expense of the PN, while MLP also managed to uphold a majority in the locality of Rabat. The MLP is also celebrating a victory for the locality of San Ġwann and it is poised to win Pieta', both of these at the expense of the PN.

So far the counts for 11 localities have been fully completed. These are the localities of Xghajra, Gudja, Għaxaq, Mgarr, Rabat (Gozo), Għarb, Sannat, Lija, Mdina, Mtarfa and Kalkara.

The MLP indeed registered an increase in votes across the board.

The local council elections took place in 23 different localities, three of which in both Gozo. The final turnout was of 66%. The highest turnout was registered in Mdina (83%), one of the smallest localities, and the lowest was recorded in Sliema and Msida (59%).

Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg and Nationalist Party (PN) Secretary General Joe Saliba said the low registered turnout will badly affect the Nationalist Party and lead to a loss of seats. They also expressed their disappointment on the turnout and stated that an evaluation of the turnout should be carried out by both parties.
