The Commission for Fair Trading ordered Melita Cable plc to stop blocking Italian channels that are accessible via television aerial with immediate effect.

This Court ruling, which is applicable for the next three months, was taken after complaints were made, especially regarding the upcoming World Cup matches.

The Commerce Division said that this decision would be a provisional one but that applies to other sporting activities shown on television.

The Commerce Division, presided over by Magistrate Silvio Meli, ruled that, while it did not want to censor the company's objective of expanding and maximising its profits, Melita Cable's exclusiveness to transmit this year's World Cup games could impede and restrain fair competition in Malta.
