Eight irregular immigrants feared lost at sea

Around eight irregular immigrants are feared dead as the boat they were on sunk in Maltese territorial waters in the channel between Malta and Sicily on Friday morning. Another sixteen were brought to Malta on an Italian vessel. Another four were airlifted by helicopter due to their serious medical condition.

On the boat there were another three irregular immigrants who died in this incident.

The authorities were alerted of this incident at around 05:50CET by an Italian fishing boat who had noticed a capsized boat and a number of persons at sea calling for help. The Maltese authorities were informed and immediately sent a patrol boat to help.
