Charles Micallef, 52 from Floriana, and his brother Louis Micallef, 58 from Luqa were placed under house arrest against a personal guarantee of Lm1,000 after assaulting surgeon Prof. Alex Manche. The two men had pleaded not guilty.
The incident occured on Friday, 9th June 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital at around 15:00CET.
The charges pressed against them include threatening a public servant official, of injuring the said person and of breaking the public peace. They were also charged of smoking in a prohibited area.
While conducting his visits, Prof Manche had brought to the two men’s attention that smoking was prohibited in hospital. The two men started arguing with him and allegedly punched him.
Magistrate Abigail Lofaro presided the Court.
Meanwhile, Moussa Ahmed Ayoub, 25, and Ahmed Mohammed Abdulkadir, 24, two men of Somali origin were arraigned in Court charged of stealing a vehicle and tools that were in the vehicle and also of damaging the said car and of driving without police license. The two Somalis had been granted humanitarian status after reaching Malta irregularly.
The theft occurred in Albert Town in Marsa during the night between June 10th and 11th, 2006.
In another court case on Monday, a man, 31 from Fgura was sentenced for two years in jail and fined Lm2,000 after he was found guilty of trafficking drugs. The accused is Emanuel Vella, known as Il-Pahh was charged of drug trafficking in Fgura in May and June 2004.
