On Tuesday, the President of Malta, H.E. Dr. Edward Fenech Adami presided over the laying of the foundation stone of the new secondary school being built adjacent to the M.A. Vassalli Junior Lyceum in Tal-Handaq, Qormi.
The government has invested Lm 3 million in the school, which is planned to be finished in 2008. The school is another Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS) project which will have similar facilities to the recently opened St Benedict’s college.
The secondary school which can take up to a 1,000 students, will form part of the college which will bring together the Qormi, Zebbug and Siggiewi primary schools. Work on site started four months ago, while construction works are planned to be finished in 2007.
The school in Tal-Handaq will provide 12,000 squared metres of classes (40 classes distributed on four floors), eight science laboratories, seven technology labs, six computer labs, special classes for drama, music, art and ceramics, environmental studies, cooking, guidance, a clinic, a chapel, a library, offices for Heads, Assistant Heads and administrative staff, boardrooms as well as a multipurpose room, among others.
The school is completely accessible for persons with disabilities and will have lifts. There will also be a car par which can take up more than a 100 cars as well as a sports ground with synthetic turf as well as other sports facilities.
On the completion of the school, modernisation works will start on the existing Junior Lyceum so that then both schools can make use of comon facilities.
Meanwhile, Minister Louis said that preparations are underway for work to start on the reconstruction of the Bormla secondary school known as Guseppi Despott Verdala Junior Lyceum.
Minister Galea also that the Parliament will soon start discussing the amendments to the Education Law which will provide the legal basis for the new autonomous colleges.
