An anonymous telephone call at 1210 CET on Thursday afternoon claimed that there was a bomb on site at Mater Dei Hospital, that was destined to explode at 1500 CET. The Medical Services Foundation and Skanska Malta JV contractors were informed about the threat by the Police.

Police forces and the AFM Bomb Disposal Unit, aided by security personnel and staff from the hospital began an intensive search around the site, which resulted in nothing being found. The search finished just before 1500 CET. Over 1,300 employees were evacuated from the site, however work was restarted at around 1515 CET.

Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech went on site to see to employees after he was informed about the incident and stated that no threats would put off the work that is currently taking place at the hospital in order for it to be completed on time.
