More than 60 per cent of students have passed their Junior Lyceum examination, the Ministry for Education, Youth and Employment said in a press release on Tuesday.
2,389 students out of a total of 3,968 passed all five subjects. Of these, 1296 (59.37 per cent) are boys and 1093 (61.23 per cent) are girls.
This is the second consecutive year that over 60 per cent of students passed their exams, however 2005 saw the highest percentage of passes with 60.44 per cent.
This year’s result represents an improved pass rate by 10 percentage points over that in 1999. The Ministry reminded that only 16 per cent of students had passed their Junior Lyceum examinations in 1982, with the percentages increasing every few years.
While praising the country’s primary educational level, Minister Louis Galea said that he will be keeping his feet on the ground to make sure that such a positive trend within the education field be improve.
Minister Galea also said that the government will be undergoing reforms in the education field. He also said that currently there are studies being carried out to analyse the Junior Lyceum exams and other 11+ examinations.
The results of the studies together with recommendations, which are taking into consideration the opinions of students, teachers and parents alike, will be presented next year.
