On Thursday Paul Caruana was sentenced to three years in prison after grievously wounding his wife.

The 34-year-old man from Zejtun had stabbed his wife Sandra Caruana in June 2003 following a row. Paul Caruana was not found guilty of the attempted murder of Sandra Caruana, however, with six votes against three, he was found guilty of seriously wounding her while in a disturbed frame of mind.

Following the attack, Sandra Caruana was placed on danger-list after losing large amounts of blood.

The trial lasted four days and came to an end on Thursday with Magistrate Joe Galea Debono sentencing the man to three years in prison.

In delivering the sentence the court took into consideration Caruana's clean conduct, as well as his disturbed frame of mind during the attack. The court also took into consideration that Paul Caruana had never injured his wife prior to the attack and noted that Sandra Caruana affirmed that she forgave her husband for his actions.

Paul Caruana pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of his wife.

Lawyers Dr. Giannella Caruana Curran and Dr. Emmanuel Mallia appeared for Paul Caruana.
