On Thursday 25 illegal immigrants took over an Italian fishing vessel 40 miles off the Maltese coast and ordered the captain to change route and sail towards Italy.

The illegal immigrants had initially asked the fishing vessel to assist them after the boat they were traveling on came to a standstill.

Ansa and TGcom reported that the vessel’s crew immediately helped the illegal immigrants by allowing them climb on board. However, once on the fishing vessel, the illegal immigrants ordered the captain take a different route and steer the "Vincenzo Padre" vessel towards Italy.
