A group of illegal immigrants was brought ashore at Haywharf on Friday night.

The group of 24, consisting of 18 men and 6 women was helped ashore by members of the Armed Forces of Malta. The vessel was first spotted on Friday afternoon.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In turn, CBS NEWS reported that earlier on during the day of Friday, French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and his Italian counterpart Giuliano Amato agreed work on a common initiative to combat illegal immigration. Many illegal immigrants aim to reach Italy on leaving for their journey of hope from North Africa. However their vessels often sink in the Mediterranean Sea or reach other islands before the Italian Peninsula, such as those Maltese.

The total number of illegal immigrants that reached Malta since the beginning of the year is now at 991.
