Infant mortality rate relatively low in Malta

Infant mortality rates are relatively low in Malta in comparison to other nations, reveal the latest statistics. So far in 2006, the average number of infants who passed away was of 3.86 for every 1,000 births. This figure is the eighth lowest among 45 nations comprising the European Union bloc. While the European Union’s infant mortality rate stands at 5.10 per 1,000 births, that of the United States of America is at 6.78 so far for 2006.

According to Medical News Today the 'The National Institutes of Health' of the USA revealed that the three countries with the lowest infant mortality rate are Singapore at 2.29, Sweden at 2.76 and Hong Kong at 2.95, where the figures are all based on every 1,000 births.

In turn, EU member Lithuania registered the highest infant mortality rate with 6.78 deaths per 1,000 births. Croatia followed with 6.43 along with the USA with 6.43 per 1,000 births.
