A Somali refugee was jailed for one month on Monday after being found guilty of assaulting Police Corps members last May.

26-year-old Omar Osman Olmar, was accused of assaulting and threatening Sergeants Nikolai Sant and Emmanuel Agius on the evening of 9th May 2006 in St.Julians. Olmar was also found to have relapsed.

The man was also accused of lightly injuring the Sergeants while failing to comply with Police orders, resisting Police orders with violence and breaching public peace. Eritrean refugee Habtom Tesema Berhea who was also involved in the incident will be sentenced in a separate court hearing.

The court heard how a number of witnesses saw Olmar push Police officials on a bus while drunk. The court did not act leniently because Olmar had already been found guilty of exhibiting violent behaviour in other instances.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera who presided over the court sentenced the man to one month in jail.

Inspectors Martin Sammut and Carmelo Abdilla led the prosecution.
