A tragedy was narrowly avoided on Thursday, when a container full of petards exploded on a barge during celebrations of St Lawrence’s feast in Vittoriosa. Nobody suffered any injuries as the fireworks ripped through the container and nobody was present on the barge, floating inside the Grand Harbour, at the time of the explosion.

The loud explosion which took place at around 0845CEST, was heard from Senglea, Cospicua, Valletta and Wied il-Għajn.

The explosion sent pieces of metal flying through the air, however no casualties were reported. In turn, a number of Senglea residents reported damages to their windows and doors.

According to The Times of Malta an eye witness said that the petard packed container was set off after being hit by sparks from the fireworks display.

Police are investigating the case and attempting to establish the cause of the explosion.
