While the Maltese Islands are celebrating the feast of Santa Marija and remembering the arrivial of the famous Santa Marija convoy with vital supplies during the Second World War, another sea vessel arrived on the Maltese shores, not laden with supplies but with yet more illegal immigrants.

At around 0630 CEST a group of 28 Eritrean illegal immigrants disembarked from their small boat at St. George’s bay in Birzebbugia. The group is made up of 20 men, six women and two children.

The police immediately arrived on the scene and are investigating their arrival.

The Armed Forces of Malta were also in action, this time not to protect the country but to apprehend misbehaving youths on Monday night, the eve of the feast. 10 were arrested at road blocks in the central and southern part of Malta after being caught in possession of suspected cannabis, cocaine and ecstacy tablets.

Another five youths were caught driving without the required licence and without valid insurance cover.

All suspects and confiscated items were handed over to police for further investigation.
