Journalist Paul Carachi passed away on Wednesday, aged 80. Paul Carachi worked as a journalist for numerous years and last November he received a Gold Award from the Institute of Maltese Journalists in recognition of his dedication to the profession.

Born in Vittoriosa in 1926, Paul Carachi studied in a government primary school before winning a scholarship to further his studies at the lyceum.
However with the outbreak of World War II, Paul Carachi abandoned his studies and started working as a paper boy for Allied Malta Newspapers Ltd. From distributing newspapers, he eventually started writing in them. By the time he finished working with Allied Malta Newspapers he had become more than a little familiar with the profession of journalism.
Paul Carachi joined the Malta Labour Party in 1960 and was appointed assistant editor of the party’s paper ‘The Voice of Malta’ . He also served as assistant manager for the paper ‘l-orizzont’ and editor for the paper ‘The Malta News’. Paul Carachi’s revolution in Maltese journalism is mainly centered around the introduction of tabloid-like reporting and investigative reporting with a great emphasis on human element.
Paul Carachi was also elected in Parliament between the years 1966 and1971. He also represented Malta in the Malta Council of Europe and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Furthermore, he also served as a councilor in the Balzan Local Council from 1996 onwards.
The Institute of Maltese Journalists expressed its sorrow in the light of his passing.
Paul Carachi's funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital on Friday at 0750CEST for the Annunciation parish church in Balzan. A Mass praesente cadavere will be held at 0830CEST. This will be followed by interment in the family vault at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. Instead of flowers, donations to Dar tal-Providenza will be appreciated.
