The government nominated Magistrate Abigail Lofaro and Lawyer Anna Felice as the first ever Maltese female Judges.
The decision of their respective nominations was announced by Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi after the first Cabinet meeting following summer recess. Speaking of the Cabinet meeting, Dr. Gonzi said that there was agreement on a proposed law to incorporate various administrative tribunals under one tribunal.
This is the beginning of a process which is aimed at setting up an administrative court.
The Cabinet also agreed on a series of amends to the codes of civil procedures, including the incorporation of a code of efficiency to curb delays in court.
The Prime Minister also revealed that Lawyer Audrey Demicoli has been appointed as a Magistrate, replacing Abigail Lofaro. Dr Audrey Demicoli is 37 years old and graduated in 1993. She served as a Chairperson of the Tribunal for Small Claims for five years. She currently occupies the post of Chairperson for the industrial Tribunal.
Magistrate Abigail Lofaro is 45 years old and was born in Cospicua. She received her education in a Cospicua government school, in Sacred Heard Convent, De La Salle College as well as the University of Malta. Dr. Lofaro graduated as a lawyer in 1984 and worked as legal consultant in the Housing Department. She later occupied the post of Agent Chief of the Department. She was also a member of the Commission for Law reforms. She was appointed Magistrate in 1996.
Dr. Anna Felice is 49 years old and graduated as Lawyer in 1981. She occupied various posts concerning the advancement of women in society. She served as a member for the the Commission for the Advancement of the Woman for numerous years and worked on the 1993 law reforms concerning the family. Dr Felice was also a government consultant in the Family Court.
The swearing-in ceremony for the Judges will be held on Tuesday at 1800CEST. Dr Audrey Demicoli's ceremony will be held later during the month.
