The Maltese Church is investigating a statue of Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception that wept blood in a house in Birżebbuġa. The Curia is yet to contact the Vatican about the statue that wept blood on two separate occasions in January and April 2006.

Public Relations Officer of the Curia Charles Buttigieg said that local investigations will require a certain amount of time granted the sensitivity of the case. The Officer furthermore added that the Vatican will be contacted “should the need be felt”.

Public Relations Officer of the Curia Charles Buttigieg said that local investigations will require a certain amount of time granted the sensitivity of the case. The Officer furthermore told MaltaRightnow that the Vatican will be contacted “should the need be felt”.

Both persons with relevant information to the case as well as experts have been called to help in the investigations, led by Chancellor of the Curia Mgr. Carmelo Zammit. So far, no conclusions have been drawn, according to Charles Buttigieg.

The statue, which belongs to Angelik and Catherine Caruana from Birżebbuġa, is currently being kept inside a wooden box at the family’s residence.

The owners were given a series of directives as to not open the box containing the relic and as to turn down requests of people asking to pray in front of the statue. However, Charles Buttigieg told MaltaRightNow that it is ultimately up to the family to decide what to do with the statue and the Curia only offered the family its advice.

The Caruana family is keeping silent about the case.
