The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have retrieved the tail of the Yak-55 aircraft which was involved in a collision with another plane during the Aero GP on Sunday. The crash, which took place over Marsamxett, left the Yak-55’s pilot, 45-year-old Gabor Varga, dead. The aircraft’s tail is considered as an important element for the ongoing investigation.
Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Divers conducted a number of underwater searches in relation to the collision between Sunday and Thursday. Throughout the days of searches, substantial debris was retrieved from over a large area.
Items retrieved included a number of cameras which had been mounted on both aircraft involved in the incident.
EOD Divers successfully located and retrieved the tail of the aircraft on Thursday.
The tail was taken aboard AFM Maritime Patrol Boat and taken to Haywharf for further investigation.
In turn on Wednesday Maltese court decided that Eddie Goggins, surviving pilot driving the other aircraft, would not be charged with involuntary murder due to lack of sufficient proof.
