Searches for missing illegal immigrants continue

Searches for illegal immigrants who were aboard a boat before it capsized about 115 nautical miles South-West of Malta on Sunday continue on Monday. On Sunday twelve persons were rescued and a dead body was recovered by a Tunis search vessel.

Searches for other illegal immigrants who have been reported missing continue, however according to Radio 101 News it is feared that they have died.

The Tunis Rescue Coordination Centre informed the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) about the incident at around 1130 CET on Sunday.

The AFM Rescue Coordination Centre helped coordinate a search and rescue mission since the location of the incident was in Malta. The AFM informed all vessels navigating in the area to keep a sharp lookout for any possible survivors.

On Sunday Tunisian maritime and Italian air assets carried out searches in the area for any possible survivors.
A Tunisian coast guard boat took the illegal immigrants on board to convey them to Tunis for further medical assistance and investigations.

Searches are continuing on Monday.
