On Monday evening the recently set up Malta Dockers Union held its first general conference. During the conference the union’s statute was approved, along with the members of the union’s committee.

Speaking on Monday, the Malta Dockers Union President Joe Saliba stated that the union is to safeguard its members as well as avoid affiliating itself with any political party.

The Malta Dockers Union comprises 312 port workers who were previously members of the General Workers Union (GWU). These port workers had left the GWU earlier in September. They had resigned after claiming that they could no longer work with the central Administration of the GWU.

The Malta Dockers Union was set up on the 5th of September to represent port workers, after former GWU Maritime and Aviation section General Secretary Manuel Zammit along with the executive members of the same section tendered their resignation. On setting up the union earlier this month, Joe Sailba had said that the main aim of the Malta Dockers' Union is to normalize relationships between its members and preserve their work interests.
