Earlier this month a similar incident took place when a 16-year-old hunter was seriously injured after being accidentally shot by another hunter near Selmun.
In turn, following a fast chase, four men were on Saturday morning apprehended whilst hunting illegally at sea. The men were caught by Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) Maritime Squadron personnel on patrol some 23 nautical miles off Marsalforn, Gozo.
The men, onboard a 150-horsepower speedboat, initially fled away from the scene when spotted by AFM’s fastboat, P-01, when still at 9.4 nautical miles off Gozo.
Once intercepted, the AFM personnel from 2nd Regiment’s Rapid Deployment Team found a number of shotguns and a harpoon, varied ammunition in containers. Illegal calibers, CD-playing equipment with bird calls, and other hunting related equipment was also seized.
The four men, aged between 21 and 31 years, and confiscated hunting equipment are in Police custody for further investigation.
