Three men and two women were arrested on Thursday night in relation to two drug hauls which yielded large amounts of ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis.
The first arrest was made in a garage in Correa Street, Qormi, after members from the Anti-Drugs Police Squad uncovered 1,000 ecstasy pills, pieces of cannabis resin and some sachets of cocaine. The drugs were found in circumstances which suggested they were about to be trafficked. Police arrested four persons in relation to the case, including a 29-year-old man from Qormi, another 29-year-old man from Żurrieq, a 19-year-old woman from Ibraġġ and a 27-year-old woman of Romanian nationality. The men work as taxi drivers.
In turn, later during the night Police arrested another taxi driver who was caught in possession of a sachet of cocaine in Gżira. Searches in his private residence yielded a further 21 sachets, all found in circumstances that suggested they were about to be sold.
Duty Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima ordered various experts to assist in an inquiry.
The five persons are expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.
