The Malta Maritime Authority is investigating the grounding of the Maltese registered bunker vessel Golden Bay, that occurred on Tuesday at about 0615 CET in Marsascala.

At the time of the grounding the vessel had no cargo on board and was carrying 15 tonnes of bunker diesel, used for her own propulsion. There were no injuries and no environmental pollution was caused.

A salvage team went on board to assess the situation and first reports indicated no ruptures or water ingress. At around 1140 CET, the vessel was refloated with the assistance of TugMalta's tug Pawlina.

Further investigations by the salvage team confirmed that the hull was intact. It was therefore decided that the vessel could proceed to a shipyard for the necessary repairs.

During this operation, the Malta Maritime Authority was assisted by the Health Department, Civil Protection, Police and Armed Forces and Oil Pollution Response Module within the Ministry for Tourism.
