Six soldiers and five illegal immigrants required treatment at St. Luke's Hospitals after the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) van they were traveling in collided with a car driven by a 34-year-old woman from Żebbuġ. The incident took in Council of Europe Street, Luqa, at around 0845CEST on Thursday.

In a statement Police said that the soldier behind the van’s wheel, a 40-year-old man from Mqabba, suffered serious injuries, however he is not on danger-list.

The woman and her nine-year-old son who was a passenger in the car were not injured in the crash. All other casualties suffered light injuries. Three ambulances were called on location and took the injured persons to St. Luke’s Hospital.

Brigadier Carm Vassallo was also called on location.

Prior to the accident the seven persons were headed towards St. Luke’s Hospital. The soldiers were accompanying the illegal immigrants to hospital for treatment they required. Brigadier Carm Vassallo said that illegal immigrants often require visiting hospital, adding that this is a normal procedure which it at times carried out more than once a day.

Police are investigating the case.
