Three illegal immigrants are believed to have died in Maltese waters on Monday after the boat they were traveling on found itself in distress 65 nautical miles South of Malta.

The other 22 illegal immigrants also aboard the boat were rescued after the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) instructed Panamanian cargo ship to proceed towards the boat on Monday. The AFM called on the Panamanian vessel to help because rough seas prevented the AFM’s maritime assets to reach the illegal immigrants’ boat. The illegal immigrants were subsequently brought to Malta on Tuesday at 0500CEST by an AFM patrol boat.

The AFM also conducted a search for the three missing illegal immigrants to no avail.

Two of the immigrants who were rescued were taken in for treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital.

The illegal immigrants have been handed over to the Police for further investigations.
