Between January and July 2006, 6,077 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) tests were carried out with 26 of these resulting as positive. It is unclear whether all positive tests belong to different people because of confidentiality issues.
The information was revealed on Tuesday evening by Minister of Health, the Elderly and Community Care Louis Deguara in reply to a parliamentary question set forward by Opposition Member of Parliament Chris Cardona.
In turn Malta witnessed 50 tragic accidents during the first nine months of 2006. 19 of the deaths were linked to suicide, while a further 18 were brought about by fatal accidents. Another eight persons died in traffic accidents, while five persons died after taking a drug overdose.
Out of the 19 reported suicide cases, 15 were men while four were women, their ages ranging between 20 and 82. The information was given by Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Tonio Borg in reply to two questions set forward by Opposition Member of Parliament Adrian Vassallo.
Minister Louis Galea also said that 205 foreigners were registering for work in Malta under Part I and Part II of the unemployment register up until the end of July 2006. The Minister revealed this information while replying to a question set forward by Opposition Member of Parliament Chris Cardona.
