1,415 illegal immigrants reside in Open Centers

Presently, 1,415 illegal immigrants are living in Open Centers in Malta, according to Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity Dolores Cristina. The Minister also revealed that the centers cost Lm62,000 per month to run, in reply to a Parliamentary question set forward by MLP Member of Parliament Adrian Vassallo.

In turn, in a reply to another question set forward by the same MLP Member of Parliament, Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Tonio Borg said that illegal immigrants residing in detention centers total to 187, split between Ħal Far and Ta’ Kandja.

Between January and September 2006, Malta saw 93 arson attacks, out of which only three were solved according to Minister Tonio Borg. Arson attacks were particularly prevalent in 2005, with 124 reported cases. 2004 saw another 119 reported cases of arson, preceded by 118 other cases in 2003 and another 92 cases reported in 2002.
