Flames engulfed part of the building hosting the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta. PBS reported that the building was set on fire on purpose. Two stores in front of the building were set alight, eventually spreading to various parts of the building.

No causalities were reported. The fire broke out at around 1700CET, with students alerting the Police and the Civil Protection Department of the flames. The fire was controlled fast enough to avoid it from spreading to chemicals stored in laboratories in the building and causing further damages.

Police are investigating.

This is not the first time that buildings at the University of Malta catch fire. In 2002, the Faculty of Arts was also a target for arsonists.
