44-year-old Mario Camilleri also known as L-Imnieħru was arraigned in court on Wednesday and charged with verbally threatening two Members of Parliament. The Kordin Corrective Facility inmate allegedly made threatening telephone calls to Anglu Farrugia from prison, then verbally threatened Jose’ Herrera in court the subsequent day.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The threats were allegedly made between 29th October and 30th October 2006, after the Malta Labour Party (MLP) spoke of tender for the cleaning of the Court of Justice, which the party claims was given by the government to a company owned by the inmate’s family.
Justifying the arrest of Mario Camilleri, Inspector Carmelo Magri said that action was taken when both MLP speakers made their respective reports about the threats.
The Defense requested that L-Imnieħru is freed form arrest, a plea which Inspector Magri found objectionable granted the conduct of the inmate as well as because more witnesses still have to give evidence.
The Court was presided over by Magistrate Lawrence Quintano.
