Statins, which control the level of cholesterol present in the blood, will be given for free to all persons aged over 75 years of age who suffer from high cholesterol.
Persons who are about to turn 75 and are already entitled to receive the medication will continue to receive it. Persons over the age of 75 who have required Statins in the past or are about to start taking them for the first time can also obtain them for free.
The medicine will also be given to patients who have heart related problems or underwent heart surgery even if the level of cholesterol in their blood is low.
Last month Ombudsman Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Said Pullicino ruled that the Health Division policy barring persons over the age of 75 to obtain free cholesterol-reducing drugs is discriminatory.
