The Archbishop of Malta Joseph Mercieca has been heard saying his days at his post are numbered, in-Nazzjon reported on Wednesday. The newspaper quoted sources within the Curia who have reportedly heard Mgr. Mercieca say several times his time is due.
It was also reported that the successor of the Archbishop Joseph Mercieca could be revealed on Kristu Re feast on Sunday, as occurred when the successors of Archbishop Michael Gonzi and Bishop Nikol Cauchi were announced.
Archbishop Mgr. Joseph Mercieca, submitted his resignation briefly after turning 75 in 2003, however no nominations for a new Archbishop have been made so he has therefore remained in office. In April he had said that he is willing to make way for a new Bishop once his successor is nominated.
In July, Kulħadd newspaper had said that the Vatican had already been told by the Curia that Malta’s next Archbishop will be Mgr. Lawrence Gatt.
