Fr. Pawl Cremona OP has been appointed Malta’s new Archbishop. The announcement was made by the Curia, just after 1200CET on Saturday.
Fr. Pawl Cremona OP will be taking over the duties of former Archbishop Joseph Mercieca whose tenure spanned the last thirty years. Prior to the announcement, the Ambassador of the Holy See in Malta Apostolic Nuncio Mgr. Del Blanco Prieto informed Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi that the Vatican had approved the appointment of Fr. Cremona as the new leader of Malta’s Archdiocese.
In the recent months, speculation over who would take up the post of Archbishop of Malta been high. Last week, Archbishop Joseph Mercieca said his days at his post were numbered. Archbishop Mercieca had submitted his resignation briefly after turning 75 in 2003, however no nominations for a new Archbishop were made immediately afterwards, leaving him in office for a further three years. In April this year, the Archbishop had said that he was willing to make way for a new Bishop once his successor was nominated.
In July, Sunday newspaper Kulħadd reported that the Vatican had already been told by the Curia that Malta’s next Archbishop would be Mgr. Lawrence Gatt.
Fr. Pawl Cremona OP was born in Valletta in 1946 and was ordained priest in 1969. He taught moral theology at the St. Thomas of Aquinas College until 1973 and served as Dominican Provincial between 1981 and 1989. Subsequently, he was made Parish Priest of the Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Guardamangia, a post which he held until 1993. In 1994, Fr. Cremona was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontefice medal. In the recent years he has also served as a Parish Priest at the Jesus of Nazareth Parish in Sliema.
