282 Maltese die from smoking in ten months

282 Maltese residents lost their lives to smoking-related illnesses or diseases between January and October 2006, revealed Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Tonio Borg on Tuesday. Replying to a question set forward by Member of Parliament (MP) Carmelo Abela, the Minister further added that 213 of these deaths occurred to men.

In turn, the Minister Tonio Borg also said that 725 persons were caught smoking in places where smoking is prohibited this year.

Police took action against 722 persons smoking in bars and restaurants, while another two people were caught smoking in St. Luke’s Hospital and another person was found out smoking in a public office.

Police also pressed charges against 50 establishment owners for permitting smoking in prohibited areas.

The Minister was replying to another question set forward by MP Carmelo Abela.
