Five teenage students were given a one-month prison sentence suspended for one year after they admitted to bullying another student at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST).
The youths were arraigned in court on Friday evening following an investigation launched by MCAST to probe into a series of videos posted on the internet, showing a teenage boy being bullied by a number of students in various locations around the school premises.
The bullying, which ranged from the young man being verbally humiliated by his peers to being beaten to the ground was captured by a mobile phone camera and subsequently posted on a video streaming website earlier last week.
The five youths who are aged between 16 and 17 hail from Marsascala, Sliema, Gudja, Zejtun and Nadur in Gozo. Their names as well as that of the victim have not been published.
One of the youths was also fined Lm50 for being in possession of a penknife during the bullying, which penknife did not have the necessary licence.
The youths were charged with having, in the four months prior to December 7, at various times at the college, harassed the victim, attacked, slandered and pushed him and with blaspheming in public.
Lawyers Josè Herrera, Michael Sciriha, Jason Azzopardi and Chris Busietta were defence counsel.
The court was presided by Magistrate Apap Bologna.
