A coalition made up of 20 organizations will be holding a demonstration against animal circuses. The protest will come to a halt infront of Circo Bellucci, an animal circus performing in Malta during the festive season. The demonstration, to be held on Thursday, 21st December, will start at 1830CET in front of the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana.

In a statement, one of the participating organizations, Moviment Graffiti, said that the aim of this demonstration is to show opposition to cruelty against animals in circuses. "Wild animals such as tigers, lions, penguins and giraffes are held in cages deprived of their liberty, social life and natural environment. To make the animals perform certain tricks it is inevitable that they are maltreated with things such as whips and electric prods. Apart from this, when the Circus moves from one place to another, the animals have to travel for long hours in overcrowded containers without being allowed any rest," continued the movement.

Among the participating organizations are Moviment Graffiti, World Animal Conscience, Animal Rights Malta, Abandoned Animal Association, Hakuna Matata, International Animal Rescue (Malta), IslandSanctury Association, Nautre Trust, Noah's Ark Animal Century, SOS Animal Malta, St. Francis Foundation for Animals, Stray Animals Support Group, Subculture, Vegetarian Society of Malta, Yelp for Help, Alternattica Demokratika Żagħżagħ, Ananda Marga, Cetfree and Catsociety.

In turn, Friends of the Earth Malta (FoE) welcomed Dar tal-Providenza’s stand to publicly decline any donations deriving from activities held at the circus. The circus had offered to donate part of its earnings to the charity organization.

"Dar tal-Providenza is in great need of donations as the services it offers are maintained primarily through its benefactors. However despite its need for financial assistance Dar tal-Providenza has shown the Maltese public that respect for all living species, including animals comes before monetary matters," said FoE.

FoE furthermore appealed to the Maltese public to offer donations to Dar tal-Providenza during the festive season and urged the public to support the demonstration against animal cruelty on Thursday.
