Two Italian men granted bail after being charged with defrauding Casino di Venezia of up to Lm 75,000 ( 172,000, US$ 230,114) have been ordered by court to pay Lm 15,000 (34,864,US$45,629) in a deposit, after the Attorney General requested that the initial deposit of Lm 5,000 (11,642, US$15,209) was to be increased.

42-year-old Fabio Zulian and 58-year-old Gaetano Caramazza, along with 44-year-old Slovenian Nevio Barut are charged with fraudulently obtaining thousands of Maltese liri at the expense of Vittoriosa Gaming Limited, owner of the Casino.

The original personal guarantee the two Italian men are also expected to pay, at Lm 15,000, has been maintained.

Fabio Zulian and Gaetano Caramazza allegedly played at the Casino for three consecutive weekends with cheques belonging to a number of Italian banks as well as stolen bank drafts. In the process the Casino lost up to Lm 75,000. While the two men pleaded not guilty to the charges in December, Nevio Barut pleaded guilty.

The prosecution was led by Dr. Arthur Azzopardi, on behalf of the Attorney General, Superintendent Sandra Mamo and Inspector Antonovitch Muscat.

Lawyers Dr. Joe Brincat and Dr. Stephen Filletti appeared for Fabio Zulian. Lawyers Dr. Jose Herrera and Dr. Veronique Dalli appeared for Gaetano Caramazza while Laywer Dr. Duncan Borg Myatt appeared for Nevio Barut.

In turn, Lawyer Dr. Gianella Caruana Curran appeared for Casino di Venezia.

The case continues.
