Five men of Algerian nationality were intercepted whilst leaving a container that had just been unloaded from a sea vessel. The men were kept by the Freeport Security Officers and the Immigration Police were called on site to carry out the necessary investigations.

The Maltese police said that the ship left Algiers port on Wednesday morning and the men had been hiding in the container since then. According to preliminary investigations, the men hid in the container before it was loaded on the ship. The police suspect that the men were assisted by other persons who are familiar with the port.

The vessel had to leave Malta in the coming days since it is waiting for some containers from another ship.

Furthermore, the Captain of the ship did not accept to take back the men aboard and give them food, therefore they are being kept at the Police Accommodation Centre.
