“If Maltese people do not trust me, I will resign,” Police Commissioner John Rizzo said during a press conference held on Friday.
During the press conference, Mr Rizzo spoke about Brian Vella’s jury, the series of hold-ups that occurred this week and also regarding the New Year’s Eve Party held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.
Mr Rizzo insisted that the first dissolution of Brian Vella’s trial by jury was not ordered due to his testimony. However, he refused to comment on the dissolution of the second jury earlier this week. He said that Mr Rizzo explained that Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono had insisted that the first jury was not dissolved due to the Commissioner’s testimony.
Regarding the tragedy on New Year’s eve, Mr Rizzo stated that the organisers of the party at MCC had obeyed all the rules set up by the Police and abided by the regulations included in the police permit that was granted to them only two days before the party.
Police Assistant Commissioner Alfred Abela, who was present at the party, stated that some police had warned some youths to stay away from the Valletta bastion walls.
Mr Rizzo also spoke about the spate of hold-ups that happened this week. He said that the police are expected in the coming days to arraign in court several persons in connection with the hold-ups. Mr Rizzo insisted that the Maltese Police, with their limited resources are working hard to find those responsible for the latest hold-ups.
He added that the Mobile Squad has strengthened with the addition of 15 police officers and 20 cars, while last year, the Maltese Forces invested in various equipment, including torches and radios.
The Police Commissioner announced that the Maltese Forces is expected to issue a call to recruit 100 constables.
