Counterfeit footwearCustoms officers seized six containers filled with 134,000 pairs of shoes bearing the labels of Nike and Adidas. This discovery took place following intensive investigations on a large number of suspicious containers which originated from the Far East and were in Malta on transhipment to several countries.

Officials at the Customs Monitoring Unit at the Malta Freeport suspected that the declaration of what was stored in the containers was inexact. Therefore, the officials carried out further investigations both locally and abroad. Consequently, Customs authorities ordered officials to open the containers.

The Laborious exercise of unloading the containers yielded fruitful results since six containers were found to contain 60,000 pairs of Nike sport shoes, 62,000 pairs of Nike sandals and 12,000 pairs of Adidas sport shoes.

In a press release, the Customs Department stated that there is evidence that part of the illicit money generated by the smuggling of counterfeit products is being used to finance international terrorism.

The Customs added that the Maltese Customs is achieving regular results in its fight against fake merchandise, thanks to the commitment of the Customs’ employees. It added that such discoveries are impeding the loss of jobs in this particular sector.
