Maltese-flagged ship struck by Panamanian container

A Maltese-flagged ship was struck by a Panamanian container ship on Friday near the Peruvian port of Callao. A member of crew of the Maltese-flagged ship is still missing after he was knocked off the ship during the impact. He has not yet been found despite the efforts of rescue teams searching for the sailor off Callao, a port city adjoining Lima, Peru's capital. Just before colliding with the Maltese-flagged ship, the container also collided with a Cypriot cargo vessel. 22 crew members from the Panamanian ship were rescued in all. The container sustained heavy damages and eventually sank.

The 500-foot-long Panamanian vessel known as Twin Star was reportedly torn in half by the first impact with the Cypriot ship.

According to the Associated Press, port officials said the accident occurred around sunrise as the ships traveled near each other in heavy fog. The officials they didn't know exactly how the vessels collided.

Earlier in January another Maltese-flagged ship was involved in another incident, when the ship Sichem Pandora was involved in a collision with another ship which left five people unaccounted for.
